Turn iPhone photos into files everything can open

Your iPhone saves photos as HEIC, which Windows, older software and most websites still refuse to open. Converting to JPG makes them work everywhere.

Apple switched to HEIC in 2017 because it stores the same picture in roughly half the space of a JPEG. The saving is real, and on the phone you never notice it: iOS shows HEIC files as normal photos and quietly hands out JPEG copies when you share through AirDrop or Messages. The trouble starts when the file itself travels — copied off the phone by cable, pulled from a backup, or attached to an email from a Mac. On a Windows machine it lands as an icon nothing will open.

Converting to JPG solves that permanently. JPEG is thirty years old, every operating system reads it without help, and every upload form accepts it. The file gets larger, usually by somewhere between a third and double, which is the price of a format that works everywhere.

This page converts HEIC on your own device. The photo is decoded and re-encoded by the browser you are reading this in, so it is never uploaded, never stored, and never seen by anyone but you. That matters more with photos than with most files, since a HEIC straight off a phone carries the date, the camera and often the location it was taken.

Questions

Will the photo lose quality?
Slightly. HEIC and JPEG are both lossy, so re-encoding loses a little detail. At the default quality the difference is not visible at normal viewing size, and you can raise the quality setting if you are going to print or crop heavily.
Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC compresses far more efficiently. The same photo as JPEG is typically one and a half to two times larger. That is the trade you are making for a file everything can open.
Can I convert several photos at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like and they convert one after another, then download together as a single zip file.
Does the location data come across?
No. Converting reads the image and writes a new file from the pixels, so camera and location information in the original is not carried over.
